Chiang Mai – Home Away From Home

The last two days have been extraordinary. I’ve been giving Cecile short prenatal sessions. She is reading a book that says pregnant woman these days pamper themselves too much and need to learn to tough it out. I think she is amazing and moving through her pregnancy with grace and determination.  Anyway she is grateful to have someone to talk to, and 20 minutes of asana is just about perfect.

Then left for old town Chiang Mai (within the ancient city walls surrounded by a moat). I had a self-guided walking tour lifted from the Wall Street Journal travel section and easily found the starting place. The first few instructions were fine, then a gate was locked, and I could not find my way around it to continue the tour.

Eventually I saw a sign for Namo Yoga, met one of the instructors and my day took an entirely different turn. He studied with Ross (I taught at Ross’ studio  Yoga InsideOut, in West Hollywood) We talked for a few, he was running late, but suggested I make my way to Wild Rose Yoga Studio. I ditched my walking tour plans and set out to find the place. On the way I met an English woman who was also looking for the studio. We met Rose, spoke lovingly about our mutual friends in the States, and made plans to take class there tomorrow with an Anusara teacher. After lots of hugging, Adane, the English woman, and I set out for lunch. On Rose’s recommendation, we went to a place called Dada Cafe where we ran into a couple staying at my place (Tonnam Homestay). One of them has been practicing with me in the early morning and her boyfriend is here studying Thai massage. Chiang Mai is beginning to feel like home away from home. Then off to another oil massage, and another cooking class with Adane. If nothing else, we’ll be eating a lot of green papaya salad at my house. When I got back to Tonnam, Pom was waiting for me, worried that I was lost or in some kind of trouble! I’m afraid she stayed late just to make sure I got in safely.

See you all soon,
